Default How Good Is This?

I ran afoul of the Master of Damage.
I now have the urge to test my abilities against him, and so I opted to first try out my all powerful, super duper pickle bringing Pet Build against him to see how I could fare.

First I gave it a whirl with just my pet attacking, unbuffed. My pets damage ranged anywhere from 29-31 all the way up to over 65. That's unbuffed. It tended to have a DPS of 20-30.

Then I opted to try Bow Attack + pet attacking, with my pet buffed and pet attacks.

The end result was:
You did 13,032 damage over 180 seconds, for an average of 72 damage per second.
Your best damage in a single second was 186, done at 165 seconds.
Death occurred after 8 seconds.

What I'm wondering is...how good is that in the PvE sense? Is it okay, piddly widdly or OH WOW or what? I have no clue as I have no real concept of a measuring stick ATM.

72 DPS is pretty decent really. But you have to remember that as a Ranger with pet you r DPS will usually be a bit lower in PvE due to blocking, DAS, etc.

Keep in mind theres more to it than just DPS. Against master of damage, all you have to do is stand there and deal as much damage as possible. In PvE, you'll have to drop damage slots for stuff like DShot, block stances, etc. We can't really judge a build based on DPS alone when we don't know how you're producing it.

Also, applying preps and stances takes up time, and could slow down the build, and the build has to be sustainable over a long period of time (energy-wise), and you should be able to move from one target to the next easily to be very PvE effective.

OP's reported 72 DPS is over a period of 180 seconds. that's well sustained in pve.

72 DPS, sustainable over 3 minutes, is very good if your build also has some utility/interrupts/etc.

But it's pretty bad if your build is damage-only.

if that was in response to my post: i'm not trying to say 72 dps over 3 minutes is a lot. i'm saying that Skye Marin's comment about needing to take casting time of preps/enchants and other buffs into consideration was useless because a period of 180 seconds already incorporates at least a few application cycles of every buff in the game.

No, my comment was not a response to yours, I agree with you.

I always do the full 3 minutes at Master of Damage to check if my builds can sustain their damage/skills/energy indefinitely (ie. through many several cycles). Having big spike damage is no use to me, if I can't use it when I need it.

Yeah, I was running:
Dire Black Widow(Piercing Damage), level 20

The trifecta of Beast Master attacks, IMHO:
Enraged Lunge
Scavenger's Strike
Brutal Strike

And then:
Feral Aggression(I can keep it up permanently with 16 Beast Mastery)
Whirling Defense(For personal defense, der)
Distracting Shot(Cause I lurves it)
Comfort Animal(So I can have a pet!)
??? Optional ???

I'm still trying to figure out what to put in the last spot. I keep swapping between sloth hunter's shot and dwarf weapon. Dwarf Weapon tends to take a lot of my attention away from my pet and keeping his attacks going properly, though, so I'm thinking of picking up something long-lasting.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I have something like:
16 Beast Mastery
12 Expertise
9 Marksmanship

Or something ...too lazy to open GW right now.

skills tend to have too tiny a benefit to bother with when it comes to 14-16 attribute, and sacrificing 75 health just for a couple more points is silly in most cases. In a PvE general scenario, you'll want to have higher health for more survivability so you can actually deal that amount of damage, so the monks can heal you, so you have more protection against degeneration, etc. I would take that down to 14 beast mastery via a minor rune, but that's just me. If you feel having 2 extra points is worth the loss, you should stick with it.
